Behaviours as an Expression of Communication in Dementia


Second Annual Sonas aPc Conference

MAY 2010 Conference The conference will explore the causes of behaviours that are associated with dementia and the opportunities for communication that they represent. It will demonstrate how to use these opportunities to deliver best practice, in the context of the HIQA residential care standards. It will be of immediate, practical relevance to all care providers, including family carers.






The speakers are international dementia care experts. They include:

Spirituality and Physical Wellbeing in Later Life


Fourth Annual GOLD/Sonas aPc Conference
Thursday 25th March, 2010 in Avila Conference Centre Donnybrook, Dublin

In recent years Sonas aPc has collaborated with GOLD (Growing Older Living Deeper) in its Spring Conference. This year the conference takes place on Thursday 25th March, 2010 in Avila Conference Centre Donnybrook, Dublin, beginning with registration at 9.30am and finishing at 4pm sharp. The cost for the day, which includes a light lunch, is €30.00. Places are limited so early booking is recommended.

The overall topic for the day is Spirituality and Physical Wellbeing. There will be two main presentations. In the morning Rev. Dr. Denis Robinson will present two sessions in which he will address the issue of Self Care. In the afternoon, Dr. Ursula Bates, a Clinical Psycologist who is attached to the Blackrock Hospice will give us “an experiential introduction to mindfulness based stress reduction”. The Exercises include Mindful eating, short body scan, mindful breathing and poetry.

 Person-Centred Communication in Dementia


Sonas aPc Conference, 18th May 2009

This conference aimed to increase the understanding of person-centred communication in dementia and provide delegates with practical knowledge in this area. It explored the experience of dementia, including behaviour that is challenging to staff or carers, and gave residential care providers guidance on how to demonstrate evidence of best practice within the context of the HIQA National Standards.

Mary Harney, Minister for Health & Children, opened the conference and presented awards for Excellence in the Implementation of Sonas to St Luke’s Home, Mahon, Cork and TLC Centre, Swords, Co Dublin.
