SIMS

The SIMS programme shares the same essential features of Sonas and is for the same client group. SIMS is an adaptation of the Sonas Group Session for use on an individual basis and, as such, is implemented differently and there are different factors associated with its implementation.

SIMS is perhaps most appropriate for the solitary individual, who is often very isolated and has little stimulation from staff and little interaction with other residents.

There is an opportunity within SIMS to individualise the session for the participant. While structure and repetition are still essential features of the session, there is more scope for the practitioner to use his/her knowledge of the individual to enhance the session and to use some meaningful object as a focus for the personal contribution section. Examples might include a photograph or a treasured object, or, for example if there is a piano in the person’s home, the practitioner and client might sit down and play something together.

The frequency and time of day that the sessions take place can also be organised to best suit the individual client and those caring for him/her. We make recommendations to the practitioner as to how a schedule of SIMS sessions might be set up and contracted with a family, if the sessions are to take place in the family home.

There is also an individual session based only on music and touch, which provides a relaxing interactive environment and quality time for carer and client.
